A different perspective: In our corporate environment, for a long time we could only present content through a content management system, and it only allowed you to upload a single asset.
We, for years, used the SWF only. That really limited us, as Rick mentioned ("things fall apart") - we had to create workarounds or flat-out couldn't use right-clicks, TOCs, etc.
The upside: the users could access our stuff. The downside: it was kind of kludgy, and the SWF auto-resizes to fit the browser window. That meant it was most of the time stretched out and the graphic quality wasn't the best.
If you have a choice, and you're publishing as SWF and asking if you need the HTML/JS, etc., then here's my response: Use all the files Captivate produces for you. The HTML links the SWF and JS so everything works properly. It also constrains the SWF so it displays at the appropriate size/resolution.
